How to Create a Political Disclaimer for Facebook Ads
Facebook ads that are about social issues, politics, or elections must contain a disclaimer to run. As a nonprofit, there may come a time when you need to run ads about social, political, or electoral issues, so verifying your business and setting up a disclaimer will save time and reduce ad rejections so that you can hit the ground running!
There are a few ways to create a disclaimer, but by following this guide, your ads will have the label “Confirmed Organization,” which will build credibility with your audience.
Let’s begin.
Step 1: Identity Confirmation
Anyone who is going to create, edit or manage political, social, or election ads need to confirm their identity. To do this, go to the settings on your personal Facebook, and under general settings, you can confirm your identity
What you will need:
- Copy of a government-issued ID.
- Physical address
- Social security number
Step 2: Verify Your Business
Next, you need to verify your business. To do this navigate to the security center from Business Settings. Follow these steps for an easy verification process!
- Click start verification
- Enter your business details. PRO TIP: make sure that the information you submit matches the information on the documentation provided. Even if your organization has moved, the address, name, and phone number provided MUST match the information on the documents you submit
- Submit requested documents
To verify your organization’s name, upload one of the following:
To verify your organization’s address & phone number, upload one of the following:
Lastly, provide a contact method for Facebook to send you a verification code. This will have to be the phone number provided earlier, or an email with your organization’s domain in the email address.

Step 3: Create Your Disclaimer:
For the next step of the process, navigate to your organization’s Facebook page. Select settings & privacy from the drop-down menu, and choose New Page Experience. From here, you can select Issues, Electoral, or Political Ads, and Facebook will provide you with a to-do list to set up your disclaimer.
Let’s break this down step-by-step:
- We already confirmed our identity – but this is a great time to make sure all page and ad admins have confirmed their identities
- Create a disclaimer
Select the “create a disclaimer” button and enter your organization’s details. Facebook will attempt to verify your organization. If the algorithm cannot do this with the information provided, you will have to provide contact information so that Facebook can send you a verification code.
This will have to be the phone number provided earlier, or an email with your organization’s domain in the email address. (Are you getting déjà vu?)
- Link an ad account to the disclaimer. You will be able to do this once your business & identity is verified and your disclaimer is approved.
- Assign page responsibilities. It’s usually best to choose the organization’s Facebook page, but you can also select any admin with a verified identity.
- Connect your Instagram account. This will allow you to run your ads on Instagram as well.
BONUS TIP: Add your Instagram account to your business manager…you’ll get invaluable insights into paid & organic growth, ad insights, and audience insights!
