How the Election Effect Can Impact Your Nonprofit

2 min to read ✭ In this post, you'll learn what the election effect is and how it can impact your nonprofit.

Learning From the Past

Did you know that, according to Classy, 46% of respondents say their political beliefs dictate the organizations or causes they personally donate towards? The data from the 2016 election shows that nonprofits involved in politically charged causes had the opportunity to gain both new donors and increase recurring giving during the election cycle. Planned Parenthood received over 20,000 donations in the name of Mike Pence after the 2016 election.

The Upcoming Election

With how polarizing this election is, there is no doubt that we can anticipate an election effect when it comes to donating in November and December. No matter which side wins, some call it the Trump Bump while others call that Rage Donating, it’s going make a big impact. Be on the lookout for an increase in recurring donors, especially for civil rights, social justice, reproductive rights, and LGBTQ organizations. It’s going to be a polarizing year. That is for sure.

How to Prepare Your Nonprofit

Donors want to do their part for the causes they believe most in. If your organization has the opportunity to capitalize on the election effect, be sure to pay close attention to the news. Be active in the conversation and be ready to quickly mobilize and campaign when the opportunity presents itself. We certainly recommend having plans and campaigns ready to go, whether Trump or Biden win the 2020 election.
