#GivingTuesday Growth Records

Giving Tuesday 2017 broke records within the nonprofit sector with over $274 million dollars donated in just one day. Over 2.4 million gifts were made on the day with over one million social mentions with the hashtag #GivingTuesday.  From 2016 to 2017, Giving Tuesday saw an increase of over 63 percent for total donation revenue and an increase of over 53 percent of actual donation give volume. The amount of growth this one day of the year has seen is something truly amazing. The ability to raise a tremendous amount of money for deserving nonprofits in just ONE day is something to stay excited about in the future as well.  While it’s exciting that Giving Tuesday’s overall success rate jumped exponentially from 2016 to 2017, it’s important to look at the growth trends over the few years prior as well. So, let’s take a look at how much Giving Tuesday has grown in the past six years.

Giving Tuesday 2012: $12,000,000

Giving Tuesday 2013: $27,000,000

Giving Tuesday 2014: $47,500,000

Giving Tuesday 2015: $116,000,000

Giving Tuesday 2016: $168,000,000

Giving Tuesday 2017: $274,000,000

One of the biggest contributors to the donation jump from 2016 to 2017 was the role Facebook fundraising played last year. The nonprofit sector saw $45 million in donation revenue from Facebook alone. Additionally, many of the big donation platforms saw donation increases as well. Over the last year, Blackbaud went up 28 percent while Network For Good increased 16 percent and Classy saw the biggest jump at 58 percent.

Giving Tuesday 2018: ???

As the Facebook fundraising platform grows, we have a feeling that Giving Tuesday 2018 will prove to be the biggest yet. Not only has Facebook fundraising continually optimized its donor experience since 2017, but other donation platforms have also continued to create content, share best practices, and inspire their customers and donors for more success throughout the year. These efforts will naturally play a huge part in the overall success of the nonprofit sector and on November 27.

So, what does all this mean for Giving Tuesday 2018?

Well, we have a gut feeling that the divisiveness of the past year on social issues combined with a growing economy places us in the front lines of yet again the biggest Giving Tuesday in nonprofit history.

If we see merely a 30 percent increase from 2017 to 2018, that means that nonprofits will raise over $356 million dollars in one day. Therefore, an increase of over $82 million dollars over last year. These predictions might be big, but we will only continue to do more good and have bigger impact in 2018, 2019, and the years to come.
