How to Create a Political Disclaimer for Facebook Ads

2 min to read ✭ In this post, we will teach you how to create a political disclaimer for your Facebook ads so that you can run politically approved ads.

Facebook ads that about are social issues, elections, or politics must have a disclaimer, which will appear at the top of the ad and include information about the entity that paid for the ad. As a nonprofit, it is common that your ads will fall into one of these three categories. In order to prevent your ads being disapproved, you must complete the Facebook political authorization process. We’ll show you how.

1. Submit Information for Verification

Page admins, as well as ad account admins, will be required to submit a copy of at least one government-issued form of ID to Facebook for verification. They must also disclose a residential mailing address and provide their social security number. To begin your verification process the admin will go into their personal Facebook page and select settings.

Under the General Account Settings, select “Identity Confirmation” and then select “Start Identity Confirmation.”

Once you begin this process Facebook will ask a few questions mentioned above. Answer these as accurately as possible. Also, be sure to add two-factor authentication to your personal page when setting up your verification. If this step is missed Facebook will not be able to mail you your access code.

2. Enter the Unique Access Code

Facebook will mail a unique code to your residential mailing address that you provided. Once received, you will enter the code on Facebook. You simply will repeat step one to get to the access code screen.

3. Disclose Financial Details

You will need to provide details regarding funding the ads, whether the funds are coming from a political party or whether it is self-funded. This information helps the general public understand how the campaign is receiving money.

4. Link Your Ad Account

The next step is to link your ad account to the authorization and edit your disclaimer. To do this you will select Settings on your organization’s Facebook page.

Then scroll down and select “Authorizations” on the left-hand side of your screen.

Once this is selected, click on “Link Your Accounts.” Here you will go through four stages of information which will be: Accept Terms > Link Ad Accounts > Edit Disclaimers > Review & Submit. *Make sure to write your organization’s name when submitting “paid for by.”

Once this has been completed your ads should be approved and set up for political authorization and approval. If you do not see or have access to the “Link Your Ad Accounts” button, please scroll down and select “Create Disclaimer.” This will prompt you to the setup process.

5. Run Politically Approved Ads

Now that you have completed all four steps you should see a box that you can check. It will be right under your Facebook page name in Ads Manager.

All done! Congratulations you have completed the Facebook political authorization and can now run ads without getting disapproved for political content.
